I kept waiting for Kubrick to add some meaning to what was on screen, but scene after scene, oddity after oddity, no meaning arrived. I was baffled! This movie is so highly rated here! Perhaps I missed something? Perhaps Kubrick was making cosmological horror kin to “The Shining” but sadly no. The Shining while ambiguous in its horror it had clear structure and meaning. This does not. I replayed the movie, I arrived at the same conclusion. “2001: A Space Odyssey” is an overhyped fucking mess of visual and auditorial garbage. I doubt anyone will see this review but if anyone does, ratings are not a good point of reference as to whether or not a film is worth your time. Look at the reviews, all those knuckle-scrapping goons rating this film 4 stars and above, their reviews consist of crappy jokes or quotes from the movie. No actual dissection or analysis went into their scoring. It’s the unfortunate crappy meta of Letterboxd reviews.
